Gastech is the world's most important platform for the natural gas and LNG industry, with energy companies from around the world coming together to address real time energy security challenges, deliver technology solutions to support the energy transition, and identify broader opportunities to ensure energy supply remains accessible, reliable, and affordable.
As we look forward, there are two things we need to do: we need to create the broadest partnerships around the world, and, as governments ourselves, be reliable partners and reliable suppliers to our partners.
We're very strong believers in LNG. We believe the world has the capacity to absorb more and more LNG. If you look at what is being done in Japan and Asia, we see a continued appetite for more LNG. We see this in contract behaviour: long-term contracts are being signed in Asia.
Natural gas will help power the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. AI will not only rely on the development labs of Silicon Valley, but also the gas fields.
We are collaborating with other countries in 'going green'. We are really committed to the task of making sure we don't contribute any negative emissions into the atmosphere, and instead walk towards mitigating climate change.
There has been a lot of talk about the buzz around hydrogen. I believe hydrogen will have a transformative effect on the energy transition. The thing about new technologies is that they force us to invest, learn about these investments, and fine tune, and to do better with the next investments. That is what is happening with hydrogen.
When you think about the energy business, it really is the indicator of growth. The energy industry, especially gas, will continue to play this key role in changing the whole economic landscape - including when it comes to new technologies and AI.
In order to grow the LNG industry we must transform the way we conduct business. We must take into account three key things: the first is that we need to find a way to cope with LNG demand fluctuation due to the roles of renewables. Secondly, we need to find a way to sign long-term contracts. We lastly need to find a way to decarbonise the LNG industry.
The speed of the transition is a little longer than everyone expected, and we need to look at what is actually going on in the world to ensure we are efficient, and adapting to the world that is shifting, trying to get to a cleaner and more sustainable energy use.
We need to decarbonize the energy system while we invest in the new energy system of tomorrow. Post COP28, it was clear that this task will be a challenge, but possible, as we commit ourselves to clear climate targets, and continue to raise our ambitions.
In order to make CCUS lower-cost, we need to de-risk the infrastructure and ensure that government mechanisms steer the product in that direction.
We need to get to the point where key technologies are known and reviewed, enabling a much more efficient and streamlined approach to nuclear energy, and enhancing its weight in the industry.
Interconnectivity and sharing lessons learned is key. There are a lot of partners participating in different hydrogen hubs, and gathering information on what is working - and what is not - will help us learn, harmonize, and understand what works best for each community.
You're going to see some imbalances here and there, but the basic direction is towards decarbonization and we've made progress in that. The reality is that people have now accepted a transitional understanding, and this transitional understanding requires new technology, as well as storage, solar and wind.
A key point in this endeavor is how can we engage technologies - and push for research into technologies - that can support projects related to methane emissions abatement.
There needs to be more of a discussion about how we reach the requirements of the transition. We have to make sure we don’t create energy inequality. If you look at energy availability today, you have to look at natural gas - not only as the avenue fuel - but also as the destination fuel. We need to have a constructive discussion about the investments needed to reach these requirements.
